Giving Back to Our Community
The New York Capital Chapter has been active in community service for many years. In addition to individual members volunteering their services for a variety of activities, the chapter continues to be dedicated to give back to the community in which the members live.
Last year, the Chapter participated in the various events to help raise funds for several organizations including the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, Community Hospice, the American Cancer Society, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Albany Medical Center Children's hospital, and WMHT. In addition, we participated in the IRS's VITA Tax Preparers program and Habitat for Humanity.

6/6/2009 - 6/6/2009 | Historic and Valuable Community Service Activity
If you've been looking for an opportunity to give back to the community while learning about important historic events, then here's your chance. The New York Capital Chapter of the AGA is looking for volunteers to help with gardening/yard clean-up/light maintenance/fence removal for the Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region (URHPCR), Saturday, June 6, 2009; 9am - 1pm (please arrive on time for tour, but feel free to leave early).
URHPCR, Inc. is a non profit organization. Its mission is to celebrate the history of courage and cooperation among our communal ancestors. They perform this by reclaiming and sharing the voices of freedom seekers, African American abolitionists and their supporters through public education, research, preservation and community involvement. URHPCR, Inc. seeks to acknowledge the active, Underground Railroad movement in our region, to raise awareness about and stimulate interest in this little recognized and inspiring part of our history, to understand it in its historic context, to encourage the recognition of local historic figures and the activities in which they engaged, and to preserve that history. For more information about URHPCR, please visit their website at http://www.ugrworkshop.com/.
On Saturday, June 6, at 9am, the URHPCR will provide AGA volunteers with a brief tour and information about the significance of the property that we will be cleaning up. The location site is 194 Livingston Avenue, Albany, NY (Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence, a documented Underground Railroad site). No experience necessary. If you have your own gardening tools, please bring. If not, tools will be provided. Dress in clothing that you do not mind getting a little dirty. Refreshments will be provided.
