Giving Back to Our Community

The New York Capital Chapter has been active in community service for many years. In addition to individual members volunteering their services for a variety of activities, the chapter continues to be dedicated to give back to the community in which the members live.

In 2017, the Chapter participated in the following community service events:
- serving a meal at the City Mission of Schenectady
- helping at Habitat for Humanity ReStore - Capital District
- helping at Regional Food Bank of Northeast NY
- helping at Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region
- bottle and can sorting for the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society
- preparing and serving a meal at the Capital City Rescue Mission of Albany
- walking to raise money at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer - American Cancer Society
- helping prepare food for the annual Equinox Thanksgiving Day Community Dinner
- organizing and participating in our annual golf tournament to benefit the Bernard & Millie Duker Children's Hospital of Albany Medical Center

Helping at Habitat for Humanity ReStore - Capital District

When: Saturday, January 20, 2018
Times: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm (8 Adults Maximum)
Where: 70 Fuller Road, Albany, New York 12205

The AGA New York Capital Chapter needs volunteers to help at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore – Capital District. The ReStore helps make home improvements more affordable while helping to make the dream of homeownership a reality for low-income, working-class families in the Capital District. The ReStore is open to the public and offers great deals on new and gently used building materials, appliances, furniture, tools and other home improvement products at a fraction of the retail price. The ReStore merchandise is donated by generous individuals, businesses and contractors who want to support the Habitat for Humanity Capital District’s mission. The funds raised by the ReStore are used to help build affordable homes in Albany, Southern Saratoga and Rensselaer County.

The AGA New York Capital Chapter needs volunteers to help clean, organize, etc. at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region, Inc. The Ronald McDonald House promotes the health, development and well-being of children and their families. They accomplish this by providing a home away from home for families of seriously ill children, and by creating and supporting programs that directly improve the lives of children and their families.

By volunteering, you can help meet the needs of the families using the Ronald McDonald House and spend a few hours cleaning up around the House that Love Built.

Helping at Schenectady - Habitat for Humanity ReStore

The AGA New York Capital Chapter needs volunteers to help at the Schenectady - Habitat for Humanity ReStore. The ReStore is open to the public and offers great deals on quality used furniture, appliances, building supplies, and more – making home improvements more affordable while helping to make the dream of homeownership a reality for low-income, working-class families in Schenectady County. The ReStore stocks everything from windows to washing machines, and the inventory is constantly changing.

Established in 1993, Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County partners with working families, sponsors, and communities to build safe, decent, affordable homes and to provide support services that promote successful home purchase and ownership.
Schenectady Habitat serves people in need of decent housing regardless of race or religion and welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds.

Serving a Meal for the City Mission of Schenectady

Serving a Meal for the City Mission of Schenectady
When: Saturday, March 31, 2018 from 2 pm - 4 pm
Where: Wallace M. Campbell Dining Center, 512 Smith Street, Schenectady, NY 12305

The AGA New York Capital Chapter will assist the City Mission of Schenectady in preparing and serving a meal for Downtown Schenectady’s homeless. The City Mission provides three hot meals a day as well as shelter to homeless and needy families. The mission always needs volunteers to provide this valuable service to the Capital District. The mission provides the food, while we are there primarily to serve it.

Bottle and Can Sorting at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society

Bottle and Can Sorting at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society
When: Saturday, April 21, 2018
Time: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Where: 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands, New York 12204 (right off exit 6 of Rt. 787)

The AGA New York Capital Chapter will assist the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society in sorting donated bottles and cans by brands to be turned in for their five cent deposit. The Humane Society has a dedicated area where bottle and can contributions are dropped off around the clock and the sorting is done. The sorting area is outside, so dress appropriately.

The Humane Society receives over 6,000 animals per year and receives no ongoing funding from government or other animal groups. In 2017, the Humane Society raised over $100,000 from their bottle and can donations to help support their programs. They rely on volunteers to make this bottle deposit money.

If you would like to bring your family - they have to be at least 14 years of age to participate.

AGA Community Service Event Followed By Community Service Volunteer Appreciation Social Event

When: Saturday, May 19, 2018
Time: 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm

The AGA New York Capital Chapter will assist the Capital City Rescue Mission in preparing and serving a meal for Downtown Albany’s homeless. The Mission provides three hot meals a day as well as shelter to homeless and needy families. The Mission always needs volunteers to provide this valuable service to the Capital District. The Mission provides the food, while we are there to primarily serve it.

The Rescue Mission is a 501(c)(3), privately funded, non-profit organization…it does not accept any city, state, or federal funds.

* Volunteer Appreciation Social Event – McGeary’s Irish Pub *
Immediately following the Capital City Rescue Mission Event, the AGA New York Capital Chapter will be hosting a Year-End Community Service Volunteer Appreciation Social Event at McGeary’s Irish Pub (located at 4 Clinton Square, Albany, New York 12207). A limited number of drinks and munchies will be provided by the AGA. We encourage attending AGA members to bring a non-AGA member to the social event. This event will be a nice way of saying Thank You to the Community Service Volunteers, an enjoyable introduction to the AGA for non-members, and a networking opportunity.

Annual Golf Tournament to Benefit the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at the Albany Medical Center

The local chapters of the AGA, IIA, ACFE and ISACA are co-sponsoring a golf tournament to benefit the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at the Albany Medical Center and you are invited to participate.

The day will include coffee, bagels and juice in the morning, 18 holes of golf (cart included) at the Van Patten Golf Club in Clifton Park, as well as an awards ceremony with a buffet lunch after golf. Lunch will include Barbequed Chicken, Sausage and Peppers, Ziti, Deli Platter, Cheeses, and Salads. The cost of this event is $100 per person with the proceeds to benefit the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at the Albany Medical Center.

Please join us for a day of golf and to support the wonderful accomplishments of the Children's Hospital. Don’t have a full team? Not a problem! We will round out your team with other participants (we'll contact you about your team prior to the event).
